The Effect of COVID 19 on Students

A recent article came out from Wallstreet Journal stating that “Schools are back and confronting severe learning losses”. Although the pandemic had a catastrophic impact on the health of many individuals throughout the world, students really felt the pain with the shift to remote learning. The difficulty of content subsiding and ease of access to internet resources gave students this joyous feeling that “school is easy and I’m performing great!”; however, this could be further from the truth.

While there may be a small percentage of students who stayed completely honest throughout the pandemic learning, the majority would have received outside assistance through one means or another. Students can’t be blamed for this due to two reasons: the first being that all their peers were conducting themselves in the same manner, and two being that the process to university is so heavily dependent on GPAs that high school students had every incentive to be dishonest.

The issues that have now become evident with this extended period of remote learning are that students now have an inflated GPA and unfounded confidence with minimal retention of knowledge. This consequence is even more pronounced in the younger children as their foundation has not been built well and the rest of their educational path will suffer if they are not caught up to speed. In order to solve this problem, parents and students must become aware of the inadequacies at hand and take action to build from the ground up.
